My husband and I purchased a townhouse in The Hills (Bedminster) last year. The original bathrooms had not been maintained; besides the outdated appearance, they had serious, ongoing water damage issues. We knew that we would need to completely gut and rebuild.
Larry is very easy to work with. He has done a number of renovation jobs for our house, including two bathrooms. He listened to what we wanted to do and gave excellent suggestions based on his experience. He didn't try to sell us anything extra. His team did excellent work. Everyday they cleaned up all dust and debris. They were willing to return after the jobs were completed to tune up a few things (even moved a cabinet that was put in the wrong place due to my measurement error). The person who installs tile, in particular, does excellent work. The whole team is very polite.
I waited three months to write this review so that it would be fair and not clouded with the euphoria of a beautiful new bathroom. I have had the time to live in the space and note the quality workmanship. I would highly recommend Five Star Construction without hesitation.
After construction was complete, we had two minor plumbing issues, one of which turned out not to even be related to the bathroom project. My husband called Larry on his cell phone and he was at our home within a half hour. He had his plumbers back the next day. As anyone who has taken on a major project will tell you, things do happen. But to have a contractor who you can trust to resolve problems so quickly is priceless. This may not mean anything to some readers, but I want to add that when returning to the job after completion, Larry's guys took their shoes off to go upstairs. I was so impressed by their courtesy and respect.
We contacted six contractors for estimates. While we wanted to be sure that we would pay a fair and reasonable price, we also wanted to hire someone that followed the NJ home improvement contractor laws and that we felt had the knowledge, experience, and organizational skills to complete the job timely, on budget, and produce a high quality product.
While in hindsight there may have been a few things that we would have changed (e.g. grout choice), hiring Larry Hopkins, owner of Five Star Construction, was not one of them. He was so organized, proactive, and knowledgeable. He dealt with mistakes by our architect and improved upon the original design. His demo crew created a tunnel with plastic sheets and tarps to remove the debris. The electrical and plumbing subcontractors were excellent. Larry's coordination was flawless and his workers always arrived as scheduled. Larry's relationships with suppliers proved beneficial in getting material quickly so that our project was not delayed.
Five Star lives up to its name. From the day of the estimate I knew Larry knew what he was doing. He came prepared and measured & knew off the top of his head what the best layout would be for my small kitchen. He & his men were very professional & always kept me in the loop. His men would check with me on details before they did something. I am very pleased with the quality of the work & the relationship Larry has with his designer and workers.
